Title: Celebrating Four Years of FatFIRE: A Community Built on Higher Living Standards
Four years ago today, I found myself in a busy Atlanta airport, frustrated by the FIRE movement’s rapid shift toward lean FIRE ideals. In response, I launched a new subreddit: fatFIRE. The goal was simple: create a space for FIRE enthusiasts who advocate for a higher standard of living, where thoughtful discussion could thrive without the repetitive refrain of “cut expenses to the bone and invest in Vanguard index funds.”
Today, our community remains intentionally smaller—after all, true wealth often correlates with sustainability and lifestyle—yet reaching 100,000 subscribers is a remarkable milestone. I’m genuinely gratified to witness the depth of conversations that occur daily, the quality of discourse, and the sense of community that has developed.
Happy cake day to everyone involved!
A quick note: my original account, u/tamo42, was banned from Reddit for unrelated reasons. That turn of events, in hindsight, helped fatFIRE flourish. The moderators have done an outstanding job fostering a welcoming, thoughtful community since then.
